Machinist

Job Description

ATA is seeking a Machinist for the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. The Machinist will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The Machinist needs to be familiar with utilizing both CNC and manual machining equipment, determine all tooling/manufacturing processes required in the manufacture of components, structures and assemblies for spacecraft structural parts, fairings, etc. Secondarily, the Machinist may be required to assist on other tasks as needed.

Essential Functions: 

Our Machinists play a vital role in bringing design and engineering concepts to life. Taking design concepts, the machinist will construct prototypes and test fixtures for verification, testing or product development. As part of the development process, the Machinist will consult and confer with engineering personnel to discuss product manufacturability and to recommend product modifications. He or she will work with other team members to construct or modify components, tools, jigs, and fixtures.

Required: 

  • - High School/GED

  • - Directly relevant machine experience

  • - Work directly from sketches, drawings, CAD data or engineering notes to produce prototypes,
     
      engineering models or final components, structures and products

  • - Work with designers, engineers, and scientists, and other team members in an integrated
     
      product team concept, while contributing to a creative environment frequently under
     
      pressure of deadlines and first-of-a-kind designs

  • - Operate a wide range of equipment common to a fabrication shop environment, such as CNC
     
      and manual milling machines, lathes, saws and grinders

  • - Be able to setup, operate and adjust CNC and/or manual machine tools to perform
     
      precision machining operations

  • - Be proficient in calculating dimensions and tolerances using precision instruments; such as
     
      micrometers, and/or calipers, etc.

  • - Measure, examine, test and report on completed units; check for defects, ensure conformance
     
      to specifications, rework, and corrections

  • - Perform necessary tasks to maintain equipment, tools, and inventory, and also prepare
     
      machine shop for conformal inspections and general readiness

  • - Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact with customers,
     
      designers, engineers, and development team members

  • - Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Security Clearance

Desired: 

  • - Associate’s degree and Machine Tool Technology Certificate

  • - Minimum five (5) years directly relevant machine experience

  • - Ability to work on multiple concurrent jobs, diverse workload, and changing priorities

  • - A high degree of knowledge on machinery and equipment common to a machine shop and
     
      model shop environment

  • - Skilled in the operation of manual mills, lathes and grinders, CNC mills and lathes,
     
      and hand tools

  • - Detailed knowledge of general fabrication skills, working with composites, various metals,
     
      sheet metal forming, plastics, and wood

  • - Finish parts and assemblies to requested detail and specifications

  • - Skilled in operating 4/5-axis CNC mills

  • - Skilled in operating CNC lathes with C-axis and live tooling

  • - Experience with MasterCam 2018 CAD/CAM and SolidWorks

  • - Good vision, with or without correction, a thorough knowledge of basic hand tools and
     
      precision measuring instruments

  • - Current U.S. DoD security clearance
