Optical Systems Engineer

Job Description

Lead engineer for all optical physics and engineering aspects within a compact multi-disciplinary design team developing, building and testing high-energy laser beam control systems. Accountable for all aspects of engineering design synthesis, analysis, testing and results within the team. Duties include requirements decomposition from broad system-level performance expectations, system level opto-mechanical design trades, optical design synthesis, layout, and physical configuration definition. The optical systems engineer is expected to collaborate with all members of the project team and to communicate with external clients, as well as with optical component and coating suppliers.


  • - Bachelor’s degree in Optics or Optical Engineering, other related field, or equitable experience

  • - Experience using ZEMAX or other optical design packages

  • - Experience in radiometric modeling and analysis of optical system performance metrics

  • - Experience in performing laboratory and field testing including test planning, setup,
      data collection, and data analysis

  • - Experience with high energy laser optical systems requirements development and system design

  • - Knowledge of HEL systems applications and major performance trades

  • - Must be a U.S. Person, able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Clearance


  • - Advanced degree in Optics or Optical Engineering or a related field

  • - Experience with stray light software such as FRED

  • - Mechanical Engineering expertise and proficiency with design tools such as SolidWorks

  • - Current U.S. DoD Clearance

Primary Location: Albuquerque, NM

Travel: Yes, estimate less than 20% of the time
