APPLIED TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATES FINALIZES LICENSE AGREEMENTS
FOR FAST STEERING MIRRORS

ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- Applied Technology Associates, Inc. (ATA) finalized a license agreement with MIT Lincoln Lab (MIT/LL) for use of its Fast Steering Mirrors (FSMs) technology.

The MIT/LL FSMs are designed for stabilized communications lasers. The several FSM designs being licensed range from 0.75 inches to 1.8 inches in diameter. ATA will be using these mirrors to supplement their core FSM product line. ATA’s primary focus is developing FSMs for airborne and space directed energy and laser communication applications.

Jeff Grusy, Director of ATA’s Sensors and Systems Division said, “The MIT/LL designs give us proven design technology for the small end of our FSM product line, enabling ATA to provide a full range of FSM’s from sub-1 inch to the large 12-inch designs using a variety of mirror materials such as glass, SLMS or beryllium. ATA will now be positioned to become the leader in truly high performance FSM products, which will include other ATA core technologies in sensors, actuators and real-time controls for terrestrial, airborne and space applications”.

ATA’s current FSM programs involves building high performance 5-inch and 12-inch FSMs for the High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office (HEL JTO) and Missile Defense Agency under contract from Air Force Research Labs, both  Department of Defense agencies. These high speed mirrors will be used for acquisition, tracking, pointing, and beam stabilization of a directed high energy laser system at 1 KHz and higher rates.

Anthony Tenorio, President of ATA, stated, “The license of MIT/LL technology rounds out ATA’s product and enable us to deliver major subsystems for precision pointing, tracking and control using all ATA component designs. We design and build the world’s best sensors, actuators, FSMs and real time controls, which ideally positions ATA to become a world class supplier to the aerospace and defense industries as well as to major laser communications hardware suppliers”.

ABOUT ATA

Applied Technology Associates, Inc. (ATA) was organized in 1975 in Albuquerque, N.M., and ATA has acquired an international reputation for excellence in products and professional engineering services for precision measurement, sensing, and control. ATA sensors, actuators, inertial reference units and controls products are used in defense systems, earth imaging satellites, automotive crash testing, and in platform stabilization for telescopes and laser communications systems.  Named the Small Business Administration Prime Contractor of the Year in 2004, ATA has also been on New Mexico’s Flying 40 list of high-tech firms for the past four years.

Located in the Sandia Science and Technology Park, ATA employs about 70 people. ATA also operates facilities on Kirtland AFB and at North Oscura Peak on the White Sands Missile Range, and as a subcontractor to SAIC providing testing support to the Air Force Test and Evaluation Command in several locations around the country.
